Prelims Strategy Details

Qualifying Criteria: CSAT (GS Paper 2) requires a minimum scoring of 33% (66 Marks out of 200).

Negative Marking: Each incorrect response incurs a deduction of 1/3rd of the marks assigned to that question.

Exam Schedule: Both papers occur on a single day. Paper 1 in the morning session, Paper 2 in the afternoon.

GS 1 General Studies Paper 1
  • History: Ancient, Medieval, Modern India & Indian National Movement.
  • Geography: Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India & World.
  • Polity: Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy.
  • Economy: Sustainable Development, Poverty, Demographics, Inclusion.
  • Environment: Ecology, Biodiversity, Climate Change (No specialization needed).
  • Science: General everyday scientific developments.
GS 2 Aptitude Test (CSAT)
  • Comprehension: Reading comprehension and analytical skills.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Communication and logical reasoning.
  • Logical Reasoning: Analytical ability and problem-solving puzzles.
  • Decision Making: Administrative choice situations.
  • Basic Numeracy: Numbers and relations, Data Interpretation (Class X level).

Mains Written Breakdown

Descriptive Structure: Involves 9 subjective papers written over 5 consecutive days. Speed and legibility are critical.

Total Marks: 1750 marks allocated to merit list papers + 275 marks for the Interview (Total of 2025 Marks).

Optional Subject: Constitutes 2 papers of 250 marks each. Choosing the right optional plays a massive role in selection.

  • Paper A - Modern Indian Language: Chosen from the 8th Schedule of the Constitution (300 Marks - 25% qualifying).
  • Paper B - English: Reading Comprehension, Précis writing, Vocabulary & Short Essays (300 Marks - 25% qualifying).
GS 1-4 General Studies Core
  • GS Paper I: Indian Heritage, World History, Geography & Society (250 Marks).
  • GS Paper II: Governance, Indian Constitution, Polity, Social Justice & IR (250 Marks).
  • GS Paper III: Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security & Disaster Management (250 Marks).
  • GS Paper IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude (Case Studies) (250 Marks).
Essay Essay & Optional Papers
  • Essay Paper: Choose two topics from section A & B. Requires critical depth (250 Marks).
  • Optional Paper I & II: In-depth examination of the subject of your choice (2 x 250 = 500 Marks).
